Overview

Immediately after the events of The Desolation of Smaug, Bilbo and the dwarves try to defend Erebor’s mountain of treasure from others who claim it: the men of the ruined Laketown and the elves of Mirkwood. Meanwhile an army of Orcs led by Azog the Defiler is marching on Erebor, fueled by the rise of the dark lord Sauron. Dwarves, elves and men must unite, and the hope for Middle-Earth falls into Bilbo’s hands.

Viewing Notes

Peter Jackson’s elongated Hobbit trilogy concludes.  While I think a lot of this was added in to simply tie it into the Lord of the Rings trilogy, it did at least deal with some of the issues I had with the book, mainly where Gandalf went when they really could have used him, you know, for the danger.  This was definitely sniffly especially if you got tied into the characters through the other films, but because of some of the things they did with Thorin in the other two films, his changes at the beginning feel forced even with the simple explanation they give.  It just didn’t feel handled all that well.  The rest of the film was all the action spectacle I expected it to be after the amazing battles we got in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and even flashes here and there in the other films in this trilogy.  By no means a perfect adaptation, but definitely a fun one.
