Viewing Notes

Going into The Beyond I had only seen two other Fulci films: Zombie and The New Gladiators. While I loved Zombie, I felt it was missing something. The Beyond delivered.

It seems Fulci isn’t keen on rock solid storytelling but that’s fine by me. What he leaves out in plot he more than makes up for in gore and suspense.

Plot is basic. A hotel in Louisiana is the scene to a murder of a warlock by a mod back in 1927. This opens the doors to hell and then many years later a woman inherits the hotel and plans to reopen it only to discover the evil contained within and that’s now stalking the city.

Highlights for me were the flesh eating tarantulas, the face on the wooden splinter kill and the big zombie shootout at the end.

Love this movie. As of this writing 1/10/10 it’s currently my favorite of all the Fulci I’ve seen.
