Overview

Imagine your life is somewhat complete with a house, job, and wife but then your best friend from college comes knocking at your door at 2 AM. During a pot-induced hedonistic party, a plan is hatched between the two friends to create an Art Film of “two really straight men having sex.” If they only knew how much this would affect all of their lives.

Viewing Notes

Humpday stars Mark Duplass (Puffy Chair/Baghead) and Joshua Leonard as two old friends who reunite after many years. One has gotten married and is living a normal American life and the other is still finding himself and not outgrown his outrageous lifestyle from college.

One drunken night they’re hanging out with some art folks talking about an up and coming erotic film festival and they say that they could make a stand out movie where two straight male friends have sex on camera. From there we get that totally uncomfortable fallout that comes from that drunken conversation and to see if they can go through it.

What’s great about the movies that Mark Duplass gets involved in is that they alway seem very real. The term “mumblecore” has been thrown around for his movies because of the style of dialogue but I just find him to be involved in very frank and open Indie films. And not just that but ones that entertain. He has a great subtle charm that works in both his writing and on screen as an actor. I’ve loved both The Puffy Chair and Baghead and while Humpday is very much Lynn Shelton’s movie it’s much in the same vein.

Humpday takes a very uncomfortable scenario and makes it funny but not in any disparaging way towards the gay community but just in how straight people deal with their sexuality.

Lots of laughs with this one and one of the best Indie films I saw from 2009. Absolutely, Humpday is worth it’s hype.
