Viewing Notes

I’ve never watched an episode of My Little Pony. I’ve heard of this “Brony” phenomenon because one of my twitter friends is a self-proclaimed Brony who constantly tweets about the show. I turned on my Netflix this evening, bored out of my mind, trying to find something to catch my interest. This one popped up, and for whatever reason, I hit play. I’m really glad that I did. As someone who has never watched the show, I couldn’t possibly understand why grown men (or high school and college-aged guys) could like this show, so obviously aimed at little girls. After watching Bronies, I not only get it, but I am glad as hell that this movement is happening.

According to the documentary, and all the people interviewed therein, My Little Pony teaches about positivity, openness, acceptance, and love (amongst other important moral values). These are the most important lessons in the world, and ones that we can always use more of. To see these giant groups of men, all gathered at Bronycon, come together is exciting. It shows that we are progressing as a species, and are starting - just beginning, finally - to not let stereotypes take over our lives. This documentary shows that people are willing to be themselves at a much younger age, which is great because the outcome can mean less negativity and violence.

Bronies reminded me of a documentary I watched last year around this time that I fell in love with, and that is Bully. This doc shines a light on an “Extremely Unexpected” phenomenon, but one that teaches lessons that more people need to learn. I loved it, and have already My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic to my Netflix Instant Queue!
