Overview
In the year 180, the death of emperor Marcus Aurelius throws the Roman Empire into chaos. Maximus is one of the Roman army’s most capable and trusted generals and a key advisor to the emperor. As Marcus’ devious son Commodus ascends to the throne, Maximus is set to be executed. He escapes, but is captured by slave traders. Renamed Spaniard and forced to become a gladiator, Maximus must battle to the death with other men for the amusement of paying audiences.

Viewing Notes
I remember being blown away by Gladiator in the theaters. It was one of the few movies I’ve seen in the theater twice. I bought it on DVD and watched the hell out of it. Now, on Blu Ray, Gladiator looks stunning. (Make sure you buy the Blu Ray with the yellow UPC tag on the case, the first pressing of Gladiator on Blu was shit.)
The blu ray features both the Extended Cut and the Theatrical. My wife and I watched the Extended Cut and, while it was long, it actually helped round out the story and we appreciated that. It’s not the necessary cut to watch, but it does help explain certain motivations and makes for a more emotional journey.
Gladiator is a must own on Blu Ray. It looks and sounds stunning, totally worth the upgrade.
