Viewing Notes

Ginger Snaps falls on my list of Movies I should have seen a long time ago, but never got around to it.  So, browsing Amazon, I found a used copy for the price of a rental and finally had no more excuses.  I own it, I’d better watch it.

What I thought would be a run-of-the-mill Werewolf flick, turned out to be a pretty engrossing coming-of-age film involving girls. There needs to be more of these.  Us guys have Goonies, Stand By Me, and Monster Squad, but the gals only have Carrie and Ginger Snaps (at least these movies are top tier!).  Ginger Snaps also used “The Change” into a werewolf as a strong metaphor for the physical and emotional changes girls go through during puberty.  I was stunned that there was genuine substance to this little monster flick.

For the leads, you can’t get any better than Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle, their performances are dark, twisted, and funny.  The characters are extremely well written and easy to get invested in.

Ginger Snaps works both as a metaphore and a fun creature feature.  I loved this little flick and it quickly jumped to the top of my Favorite Werewolf Flicks.
