Overview

We follow 24 hours in the life of a being moving from life to life like a cold and solitary assassin moving from hit to hit. In each of these interwoven lives, the being possesses an entirely distinct identity: sometimes a man, sometimes a woman, sometimes youthful, sometimes old. By turns murderer, beggar, company chairman, monstrous creature, worker, family man.

Viewing Notes

I was lucky enough to catch a 35mm (yes, real film in a real projector) screening of Holy Motors at Colorado University after work. Muenzinger Auditorium, where the film played as part of the International Film Series, is about a mile away from my office in downtown Boulder, so it made it pretty easy to get to.

I say lucky because I had completely forgotten that Holy Motors was screening today. Thankfully IFS has a service that allows you to have an SMS reminder sent to your phone the day of the movie you’ve selected. I apparently had the foresight to set that reminder up back in January, so I got the message this morning. Still, I really had to convince myself to make the effort to go. Since the show was at 7 pm, it meant I had to hang around my office/downtown Boulder for two hours. I wasn’t familiar with the campus at all either, though I knew it was too far to walk from my office. Luckily I figured out parking from their website and was able to drive over, park and find the Auditorium pretty easily.

This was my first time seeing an IFS film, but I look forward to more screenings there. The crowd was a nice mix of college students and older people, most of whom had an obvious love of film and were respectful and quiet during the screening, to my relief.

It was a joy to see an actual 35mm print. There’s just something about film that’s comforting and heartwarming. I’ve got no problems with digital projection (when done correctly) but it’ll never replace my love of film.

Holy Motors was a great watch. Obviously a movie about the art of making movies, more specifically about the art of acting and the sacrifices, both physical and emotional, that such a life entails.

I was surprised by, and loved, the way the ending looped around to close the cycle of the day in an unexpected way. Denis Lavant was brilliant. This is the sort of role (multiple roles really) that actors dream of.

It was a great film and a wonderful way to experience it.
