Viewing Notes

A funnish, family oriented fantasy that worked well enough for me. Probably my biggest issue is that this new Oz film really has no cultural relevance like the original Wizard of Oz did. The original Wizard came out during the depression and it’s change from black and white to color, from dull reality to fantasy, feels like escapism at a time it was most needed (though fantasy films weren’t necessarily embraced during the depression).

While Oz: The Great and Powerful follows these same conventions, which is a nice nod to the original, it doesn’t have the same impact to me.

Still, a decent enough movie, though I don’t think I’d call it a classic in the making or anything of the sort.
