Viewing Notes

After a two-week hiatus due to Spring Break, it was nice to be back at the VAC at CU-Boulder to see more noir. Since Ewan had late practice for his musical he couldn’t go, so it was just Gavin and I.

Criss Cross is a prototypical noir with the dead on dialogue and bad endings for all. DeCarlo and Lancaster had great chemistry and some of the best scenes are when they square off against one another. Duryea, a great character actor, also does an excellent job. I think this might be one of my favorite roles I’ve seen him in.

About half way through, the film started stuttering and skipping. They had to stop the movie briefly, rewind the film and re-spool it. It was actually a nice reminder that we were watching an actual film print. The print was in great shape as well, with barely any scratches, great contrast and excellent sound.
