Viewing Notes

The second of two movies my wife and I attended this evening at Denver Film Festival. Thou Wast played in the smaller theater to a half-capacity audience.

This was a more challenging film to watch but also a more rewarding experience. While the story is fairly linear it hints and suggests at what’s happening, and the relationships between the characters, more than it actually proscribes or defines those things.

The cinematography, editing and sound design are what stand out here, blending together to create a visceral, enthralling experience that overwhelms your senses.

My only complaint would be with Joe Swanberg, who never seems to fully inhabit his character. I never felt fully invested in his character. Luckily Sophie Traub, as Sarah, does more than enough to get the audience involved in what’s going on. She plays Sarah with a combination of child-like innocence and manipulative feminine whiles that blend to create a pretty dangerous mix.

The producer was on-hand for a Q&A afterwards. I really want to see the director’s other film, Butter on the Latch, now.
