Viewing Notes

I liked the fact that it had a decent plot and worked in actual history, giving depth to the characters and making the audience actually care. I didn’t like the historical revisionism (or the white savior aspect, but I’ve accepted that as a symptom of the times in which the original character was created by Burroughs).

I also question why these sorts of movies always have to go with the huge plots; why can’t they encapsulate a smaller story that would allow more intimate, detailed time with the characters? He can’t just save one village or some animals or a portion of the jungle; instead he has to save the ENTIRE Congo.

The vine swinging scenes looked conspicuously out of place and fake, especially the train scene. Even the final battle lacked convincing effects.

However, the actors did a good job of bringing the characters to life and giving them depth, which softens the blow of mediocre effects and a bombastic plot.
