Viewing Notes

I came across the “lost tape” version of this movie via Twitter, posted to YouTube via Hamilton’s Trash Cinema. This is the version of the film thought to be lost in a fire, or destroyed by a vengeful film processing lab worker, depending on which story you want to believe (obviously neither are true because here it is!).

This is a pretty great piece of transgressive, shot-on-video trash cinema from the early ‘80s heyday of the format by the legendary Doris Wishman. I’ve known about her for a long time but I don’t think I’ve ever seen any of her movies til now. The soundtrack is oddly effective and the fact that the sound is out of sync with the video only adds to it. This really feels like something that could only have been made in the NYC independent film scene during that time period and I’d suspect it played well with the punks of the time as it has some tonal similarities to some of Nick Zedd’s work.

Fun lunchtime watch. I might have to watch the more widely known release of this to see how it compares some day.
