Overview

During the US Civil War, Union POWs escape in a balloon and end up stranded on a South Pacific island, inhabited by giant plants and animals. They must use their ingenuity to survive the dangers, and to devise a way to return home. Sequel to ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ .

Another great Harryhausen movie I haven’t seen in its entirety for ages. I completely forgot about the civil war prison break leading to escaping in a hot air balloon! One of those rare movies where the only black character doesn’t die in the first third of the film (in fact, not at all here).

It’s a strange blend of Verne’s Mysterious Island with a little 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea thrown in for good measure.
