Viewing Notes

While I still think Gareth Evans and Timo Tjahjanto’s SAFE HAVEN is the best segment of all the V/H/S anthologies, overall this entry is amazingly solid and probably gorier and more brutal than the others, while spending less time trying to genuinely scare you in favor of just getting weird and gory.

Ryan Prows’ hilarious and gory TERROR episode is probably the best, followed by Tjahjanto’s unsurprisingly insane THE SUBJECT. It’s everything you want, more or less, as a follow up to SAFE HAVEN while being more over-the-top and less terrifying, and perhaps a little too long.

Between LOWLIFE and TERROR, Prows is firmly on my radar as a director to watch.

I thought Reeder’s wraparound was middling at best, and nowhere near as great as her KNIVES AND SKIN film shows she can be.

I also really liked Barrett’s THE WAKE segment. Creepy and understated until it’s not!
