Viewing Notes

I haven’t seen this in over a decade at least. I remember originally going to the theater to see it with my wife. In all that time, despite being a big fan, I never realized Michael Mann directed this film! Because of that I felt it was time for a rewatch.

Knowing Mann’s films as I do now, it’s easy to see his style throughout The Last of the Mohicans. It really comes out in the way he handles critical scenes of confrontation between the main characters. The scenes always feel unforced, with a lot of natural tension. Whether that be the final showdown between Pacino and De Niro in Heat or the battle scene on the mountain pass in Mohicans.

The version I watched this go-round was the 144 minute Directors Cut, but I couldn’t really put my finger on what was added in since it’d been so long since I’d seen the original. Regardless, a great movie and one my kids enjoyed watching despite the romantic elements.
