Viewing Notes

This is one of the movies we refer to when we talk about JCVD’s decline in the late 90s. So little redeeming qualities from this film. Not just a bad Van Damme film but a bad film and maybe the worst Tsui Hark films I’ve seen, which is saying a lot.

I saw this film via VHS around the time of its release after moving to Des Plaines in ‘99 and in my mind thought this was a decent B-movie action flick. It’s worse. The odd camera angles and editing do nothing to help film (other than providing distraction). Van Damme is inexplicably an import/export guy “king of the knockoffs” that also is a world class martial arts badass while we’re to believe Rob Schneider is a top CIA agent.

Nothing makes sense including Paul Sorvino’s stint as lead CIA agent. It’s often silly w/bits of humor tossed in that are not amusing. All in all, this is a painful film watch. It’s as if we can see JCVD’s career disintegrating before our eyes.
