Viewing Notes

Don’t remember the last time I viewed this but I’m sure it’s been 10 years or longer so I was glad it was returning to the theater even with the 3D post-conversion. Fortunately I didn’t have to view the 3D version since a few theaters were offering a standard 2D presentation w/limited screenings.

Since I wanted to hit an early afternoon screening I headed up to Century Cinema in Deer Park, a theater I’ve never been to but it was the closest for a 1pm showtime. So I arrived after a 40 minute drive only to find signs on all the doors/windows that read, “Due to circumstances beyond our control this theater is closed until further notice.” Wow. First time that’s happened to me.

Checked my map and saw that Barrington AMC was only about 25 minutes away so I could make a 2pm screening. Not bad except for the traffic out of Willow Creek Mega-Church and an accident right at the choke point. Ugh. Finally got inside AMC and the usher informed me that it wasn’t the 3D IMAX presentation and if I was okay with that. Duh. I bought the ticket, stupid.

Now onto the screening… was surprised at the sparse attendance. Expected more than the 10 or so people in my theater. Ah well at least it was mostly quiet. Glad to see a few kids w/their parents. Thought it was kinda great to have a new generation experience this film on the big screen for the first time. And it was my first time viewing this on the big screen.

The digital FX do look dated but the practical FX still look great. I forgot the Wayne Knight subplot that derails the park and remembered that it’s the one thing that I dislike the most in the movie. For many reasons but it definitely hurts the movie, IMO. Also I find the kids extremely annoying. Just hate them. But at least they make sense and help drive the story. Goldblum is the real hero. He’s terrific.

The centerpiece truly is the T-Rex sequence. Has so much more impact on the big screen. The sound design is excellent. I’d love to watch just that sequence over and over. I wish I had seen the film back in ‘93 as I’d probably be more nostalgic for it and enjoy it more (overlooking the stupid plot devices). Still a good movie and I’m glad to have finally seen it presented as it was meant to be.

Oh, totally forgot Sam Jackson was in this movie! I know Goldblum has been in some of the biggest blockbusters but Jackson has easily got him beat. I’m curious what the total box office take is for all the films Jackson has been in to date. It must be a crazy number.
