Viewing Notes

Close to wrapping up my Van Damme project. Knew I had to include this movie since it’s been years since I’ve seen it. Not sure of the last time I saw it but I still remember the first time I saw it back in college at a movie night I hosted in my residence hall. I knew then that JCVD was something special.

I suppose this is the movie that put him on the proverbial map and for the time he was so refreshing to see. His final fight pattern would be replicated many times over in his subsequent films, i.e. he does well then begins to lose then gets motivated to win. Easily still one of his best films but not my favorite.

On this mini-project of viewing 20+ Van Damme movies I think I fully rest on Kickboxer as my favorite. It’s nearly the same movie but amped up with better emotional beats, a better training montage, and better fighting.

Bolo Yeung is a great nemesis however and fortunate to return again in Double Impact. Definitely a classic fight movie that would spawn a decade of fighting movies using the same formula.
