Overview

Phil Broker is a former DEA agent who has gone through a crisis after his action against a biker gang went horribly wrong and it cost the life of his boss’ son. He is recently widowed and is left with a 9-years-old daughter, Maddy. He decides to quit the turbulent and demanding life of thrill for Maddy’s sake and retires to a small town. His daughter fights off a boy who was bullying her at school and this sets in motion a round of events that end in his direct confrontation with the local Meth drug lord. His past history with the biker gang also enters the arena, making matters more complex. But he has a mission in his mind to protect his daughter and he is ready to pay any cost that it demands.

Viewing Notes

Terrible name for a good film. A better title would be “Jason Statham Kicks Ass in the Bayou” or something similar. I didn’t want to see this movie because of the title that’s how bad it is. In addition to the shitty movie poster w/the American flag.

This is really a throwback to 90s action thrillers hitting all the necessary emotional beats to propel the story. Oddly refreshing even in a year (2013) of many throwbacks to that decade. It has the central hero ex-DEA that inexplicably is a martial arts master. Cheesy biker gangs dealing in crystal meth. Conflicted antagonistic rednecks that feel remorse over their actions. Then the usual bad decisions made by all characters.

I suppose the main reason to view this is Statham and Franco, who really undergoes a bizarre character arc from badass to coward, IMO. Good supporting cast incl. Kate Bosworth whom I almost didn’t recognize at first as she fully embodies the wafer thin strung out meth addict. Weird that the side-plot w/Sheriff Clancy Brown never materializes.

All in all this is as straight forward as it gets with every beat telegraphed. But it’s done well with plenty of eye-rolling moments in-between Statham beating up the bad guys, which is always fun to see.
