Overview

A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. She rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal – an act that begins to turn her heart into stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading King’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom – and to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

Viewing Notes

Damn that was dark.

Seriously. Maybe the darkest recent Disney film that I can recall. That’s probably why I enjoyed it as much as I did. It’s good. Jolie is great. She conveys so much with so little. A look. A smirk.

I dunno why people are down on Copley’s acting; even as an evil jerk king he’s still solid. Oddly Elle Fanning seems to be the only one off her game here. Not that her character has that much to do but it could’ve been any fair-haired teen.

Also heard that the CG was crap. I thought it was pretty good and makes a nice blend with fantasy creatures and live action. Of course this is an entire sound stage movie with little in the way of a real set since it’s probably 90% CG. Still looks good.

This is like the Wicked for the Sleepy Beauty story. I really dig it.
