Overview

During China’s 1920s Republican Period, warlords carve out personal fiefdoms across the country and impose self-serving laws with the barrel of a gun. Into this anarchy rides a masked feminine Zorro, nom de guerre Violet, to do battle, right wrongs and foment rebellion against the most corrupt and brutal warlord of all, Tung Ta-Chou. Unbeknownst to Tung, however, Violet is his own daughter. Tung orders his psycho enforcer Master Wu to track down and dispose of this pesky rebel queen. Meanwhile, Violet begins a flirtation with an attractive stranger who comes to town with the other half of a treasure map held by Tung. Ultimately, Master Wu betrays the warlord on the lure of the complete treasure map, enabling Violet and the stranger to apprehend Master Wu and beat the warlord at his own game.

Viewing Notes

A tad overly convoluted masked hero story with Angela Mao as the Zorro-type vigilante Violet. However, she’s not all that great when matched with Master Wu (Chang Yi), the headhunter tasked with taking her down. She’s whips ass on the commoner folks but really gets it handed to her by Master Wu.

Dorian Tan Tao-Liang and Lo Lieh are chain gang escapees that somehow get caught up in the fracas and ultimately come to Violet’s aid for the final battle, which is pretty epic but suffers from bad editing.

The version on YouTube has Polish or Czech subtitles and the score is from Star Wars or Empire Strikes Back. I’m guessing the later having seen both recently. VERY DISTRACTING TO HEAR THIS. I’d love to see a better version with the actual Mandarin over the dub. Also a cleaner print, natch.

Worth it for the teammate to take down Master Wu. Being that this was 1979/1980 I doubt Angela Mao was doing all all those backflips but she sure does look good in the movie.

Now that I’ve seen the movie image, I may have to order that Crash Masters release if I can find it at a decent price.
