Overview

A Harvard anthropologist is sent to Haiti to retrieve a strange powder that is said to have the power to bring human beings back from the dead. In his quest to find the miracle drug, the cynical scientist enters the rarely seen netherworld of walking zombies, blood rites and ancient curses. Based on the true life experiences of Wade Davis and filmed on location in Haiti, it’s a frightening excursion into black magic and the supernatural.

Viewing Notes

First movie of the Music Box of Horrors. Great to see on the big screen again (haven’t seen it big since college and probably haven’t seen this in its entirety since then). Possibly a top 5 Craven for me. Zakes Mokae’s Peytraud is a great Bond villain. Each time he says “Dr. Alan” replace with “Mr. Bond” and it works.

Gets nutso towards the end but super enjoyable thrill ride throughout. The print was so clean at times I wondered if we were watching a print. Not the traditional start to the fest (usually a silent film) but a good movie to kick things off.
