Viewing Notes

So I finally got out to see this. I already wanted to view even before all the bad reviews came out. Then the reviews made me want to see it even more. Sadly due to a packed October I couldn’t. Glad a few theaters kept it running so I had to go out to Streets to catch the only showtime on a friday. Oddly bc they remodeled the theater houses this normally large theater was reduced to only 4 rows of ten seats or so bc they put in the lazyboy recliners.

I was shocked that there was only 1 seat available by the time I bought my ticket. But it was the best seat dead center in the last row. Anyways, it was comfortable but odd experience.

The movie is as bad as reported but it’s one of those movies that fascinated me so much that I enjoyed the ride. A lot. But it’s a strange bird that is all over the place trying to be everything to everyone. The rendition of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is particularly jarring given the time period and that this isn’t a musical.

Everyone overacts. Especially Garrett Hedlund with his bizarre voice inflections and cadence. Jackman of course is laying it on thick. It’s like a cartoon done live action or a performance you’d see at a theme park where the actors have to overact in that environment.

I could go on. This is such a weird movie it feels like things were cut that might explain more of it or they changed direction mid-way through the shoot. It’s so bizarre that I hope there’s a commentary on the blu release. I want to know what Joe Wright was thinking as he made it. Why do the musical numbers. So many questions.

It is a beautiful movie with some nice CG FX and cinematography. Cool to see on the big screen even if it’s a mess. Costume design is pretty awesome as well.

And given that I love or really like the other three Joe Wright movies I’ve seen this one is dumbfounding. How did this happen??
