Viewing Notes

Political dramas really aren’t my thing. I don’t have many sub-genres that don’t do it for me but this is one. I gravitated towards this film because of Preminger and the cast. For its time this is a loaded cast akin to 12 ANGRY MEN (which it shares Henry Fonda in a main role). Another title for this could be CONGRESS: DECEITFUL WHITE MEN.

Crazy how white this movie is. Serious. There’s like one token black actor early on but that’s it for color. That Preminger shot this in black and white makes this even more apparent. Oh, there’s the islander senator from Hawaii. Gene Tierney has a small role that I wish had played a bigger part but I love her lines.

Well made movie with plenty of good turns by a stable of old Hollywood men. Didn’t hook me but definitely one for those who enjoy politics. That it’s 2.5hrs doesn’t help but I’m sure there are many that love this movie.
