Viewing Notes

Not feeling this. Having seen at least a half dozen adaptations of the Monkey King story (knowing that there are far more that I haven’t seen) I’m wondering why China filmmakers are so obsessed with adapting this tale over and over. What else remains to be said or done differently? And it’s not like these movies and tv shows are spread out; they are literally making new films every year.

I’d love to know why since many of these aren’t very good. This one is mildly entertaining at best. Curious if this role is so desirable that both Jet Li and Donnie Yen have portrayed the MK in recent years now. Baffled why Yen would want this given that he’s entirely hidden behind the makeup and costume.

If I had to pair Chow Yun Fat and Yen together I’d rather it be a action crime flick. This film isn’t doing much for either.
