Overview
Set in the year 2020, Shiori Genbo runs the large corporation Funtom. Shiori is also a descendant of prestigious noble family Phantomhive of England. As a descendant of the noble family Phantomhive, Shiori solves difficult cases which are ordered by the queen. In order to take revenge, Shiori makes a deal with Butler Sebastian. Their deal involves Butler Sebastian protecting Shiori until her revenge is fulfilled and then Sebastian will consume her spirit.

My first Japanese film of 2019? As I watched I was wondering why this movie has a so-so rating on IMDb bc it has some good action and mystery (despite being an obvious call as to who is beyond all of it) then… the third act happens. Wow. It goes from solid action sci-fi mystery to a drag in the third act. Just prolonged exposition and flashback story. This could’ve ended at the 90min mark and been a much better movie.
Early on (after the first action sequence) I guessed that the lead actor (the butler) must be from Kamen Rider. Sure enough he’s a Kamen Rider veteran. I haven’t read nor seen any of the Black Butler manga/anime nor had any idea this is what the core of the story was about (rather complex setup/backstory) so I enjoyed how this all worked within the mystery and action beats. But this is rather exposition heavy and would be better served as a TV series i.e. J-Drama. Guess that’s why the manga/anime is popular.
If nothing else this live action adaptation made me want to check out the series and other anime films.
