Viewing Notes

Wow the PQ on this dvd is terrible.

This is like the RE animated films. But doesn’t have Japanese dialogue. Giving this a mild 6/10 for at least keeping me interested even if it’s like the filmmakers (primarily the Japanese crew) didn’t get any of the social commentary or satire from the original film. I’m almost of the belief that the directive for all ST sequels have been to disregard all of that and just stick to the action, machismo and sex appeal. This flick is no exception laying it all on really thick to ridiculous levels. Super bro dudes and voluptuous badass babes. Clearly they had a certain audience in mind. Would’ve been nice to just have some gritty soldiers (of all shapes and sizes) stuck in the shitstorm rescue mission and remove all the dumb stuff (“just met you but lets have sex!” etc).

I remember when Starcraft came out (1998, I was unemployed and played the hell outta this game). It was like “oh shit this is like Starship Troopers The Game!” But weirdly as the popularity of that game took off in major ways and the inverse happened to Starship Troopers, watching these films now (esp. w/all the satirical tone removed) they are more like Starcraft films with only the Terrans and Zerg. I mention this because viewing them in this context makes them a little better and more enjoyable. Also makes me want to play Starcraft again.
