Overview

When Hong Kong Inspector Lee is summoned to Los Angeles to investigate a kidnapping, the FBI doesn’t want any outside help and assigns cocky LAPD Detective James Carter to distract Lee from the case. Not content to watch the action from the sidelines, Lee and Carter form an unlikely partnership and investigate the case themselves.

Viewing Notes

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen this. Gonna count it towards my 90s rewatch project even tho I have seen it within the past 10 years (i think?). Was inspired to get this blu from the library bc I watched a Jackie Chan interview the other day in one the extras for CITY HUNTER and the interview was done around the time that he was making RUSH HOUR.

Welp, scratch that 90s rewatch bit… I watched this 3 years ago for the project. I’m such a dumb old man.

So this is a newish release for the Blu-ray and has a bonus disc with a new featurette with Brett Ratner and Jackie Chan that was produced in 2016. It’s 20 minutes long and quite interesting. Firstly, the story of how Ratner got Jackie into the film is telling of the kind of asshole Ratner is. It’s still a shock that Jackie agreed to be in the movie after he was so thoroughly disgusted by Ratner. Jackie talks a lot about his unhappiness making Hollywood movies, which he’s talked about on numerous occasions and this was no different. After the film was finished, he said he was done with Hollywood for good. It wasn’t until Tucker called him to tell him that it opened number 1 when Jackie realized that this could be a way into Hollywood and be successful. Money talks. Ratner talks about making RH4. Wonder if that will ever happen given where Tucker and Jackie are at in their careers right now.
