Viewing Notes

DKU-TV is doing a marathon of science fiction films today (H-Man, Telegian, Human Vapor and Matango). I watched the US version of this 3 months ago and wanted to see the original Japanese film. Thanks to DKU I can watch it on their channel. Quality is much better over that version on the Internet Archive.

Holy smokes this version is so much better than the English dubbed American cut. Such a huge difference in many aspects including being the full length (US version trims *10* minutes!). My rating definitely went up. Really solid flick with good crime & romance drama weaved into this crazy sci-fi tale. I really like how parts of this are filmed like a horror movie. The finale sequence is dazzling.

I realize that Kaoru Yachigusa is meant to be the real beauty of the story in which the Human Vapor will do anything to see her dream of dancing in a theatre become a reality (very impressive that she had to learn the intricate Noh dance routines - or she already knew them). But it’s Keiko Sata that wins my heart as the spunky reporter. She only made a handful of films unfortunately. Curious what happened with her career bc she’s great.
