Overview

A monkey king who learns the secrets of magic goes on a spree and causes no end of aggravation for the gods, who finally imprison him. In order to make up for all the trouble he’s caused, he is sent on a mission to accompany a prince who is the son of the gods on a journey through a land filled with dangers, monsters, cannibals and demons.

aka Alakazam the Great, the preferred title. Annoyed that TMDb is using Journey to the West instead of its regular title.

This is another early work by Tezuka although I don’t think he did a whole lot on the production.* It’s slight but entertaining. Shoulda saved this for a daytime viewing bc this is ideal like a Saturday morning cartoon.

*according to the credits he wrote the Japanese screenplay.

Also this was picked up by American International Pictures for its US distribution after it was re-crafted with a new dub and songs. Pretty wild the number of foreign films they acquired in the sixties. I’d love to see the original Japanese version.
