Overview

In a dystopian 2021, Johnny is a data trafficker who has an implant that allows him to securely store data too sensitive for regular computer networks. On one delivery run, he accepts a package that not only exceeds the implant’s safety limits—and will kill him if the data is not removed in time—but also contains information far more important and valuable than he had ever imagined. On a race against time, he must avoid the assassins sent to kill him and remove the data before it, too, ends his life.

Viewing Notes

First time viewing so I can’t count it towards my 90s rewatch project. Not sure how i never viewed this given everything about it is right in my wheelhouse. Such a 90s cast too but surprised to see Takeshi Kitano in the opening minutes.

okay. this isn’t a good movie. however, it is a movie that had me fully captivated. the totally 90s cast + this wild brain implant tech all set in 2021 had me on the hook. Plus to see the bizarre stilted acting throughout was equally fascinating. No one sounds natural. Even Henry Rollins is delivering silly lines like he’s delivering lines. Same with Ice-T. I’d love to watch a making-of featurette and hear a commentary. So many odd choices here.

I heard “yakuza” pronounced at least three different ways.
