Viewing Notes

Neat to see this restoration. Altho I’m sure this wasn’t the first yet a very early example of this type of rags to riches story, it’s very proto-Capra-esque. Watching this and feeling like “oh we’ve seen this so many times” only bc so many screenplays have done this story in some form or fashion bc it resonates with w/the majority of people out there esp. those dreaming of a better life.

Not really German Expression by its true definition but adjacent enough w/the use of forced perspective and blurry distortion of reality. Could also make a case for the zany epilogue completely changing the tone of somber observation on ageism and classism that delineates most of the film.
