Viewing Notes

From the director of the batshit GUN WOMAN, Kurando Mitsutake makes another equally batshit flick that co-stars his lead from that film, the modern exploitation queen Asami. However, the real star is Hayate Masao as the stoic, single-minded martial arts badass on a rescue mission to save his sister from a truly evil underground cult. tbh after the first few action beats I thought this was gonna be a fucking amazing movie. Sadly it delves into some rather dark and insipid places and gets a little too ridiculous and annoying. That said, I do admire the ambition to go balls out exploitation and get weird at times.

I really dislike the dark web cult shit tho. It’s a trope that really turns me off regardless of how it these can and do exist out there. Additionally I hate the whack job cult leader character. It’s so over the top stupid it became irritating. If it had been a straight up human trafficking abduction situation that lead the hero to face off against a group of bad guys I think I would’ve enjoyed it more. It’s like a cake with too many layers of icing. Yuck.

I do really like the fight scenes and how a lot of it was photographed so you can see the moves. The setpiece with the tractor trailer is pretty wicked and something I haven’t seen in a movie. So I give this a soft 6/10 but overall still had fun with this flick. It did make me wanna revisit GUN WOMAN and finally watch Mitsutake’s SAMURAI AVENGER which I picked up at Wizard World 10 years ago (!!).
