Viewing Notes

when Wu Jing is cast as the big bad ya know some shit is gonna go down. And yep it does go down! Heralded as one of if not the best Benny Chan action thriller, I can understand why. It moves from one action setpiece to another; all are pretty damn good. I wish wish wish they had just replaced Jaycee Chan (Jackie’s kid) with Sam Lee and called this Gen-X Cops 3: Shit Is Going Down. Instead we have Jaycee as one of the cops (along w/Nicholas Tse and Shawn Yue) and I’ve never been crazy about Jaycee. Sam Lee gets relegated to a throwaway role here.

Despite some wonderful explosions and thrilling chases not to mention some crazy hand to hand fighting courtesy of Wu Jing kicking the shit outta dudes, the movie is overly long (same issue w/Gen X and Gen Y Cops) and feels bloated as Benny crammed way too much into this. That said, it still wasn’t entirely clear what the real motives were of the supervillain seven other than to get their stolen cash back. But why the big heist at the beginning? It’s murky. Also there’s some wacky stuff w/the explosions that don’t make sense like the floor flash pods going off after a grenade is thrown (the explosions aren’t consistent w/what’s really happening).

Even with its 2+hr runtime the characters are a bit 1-dimensional on both sides. But those stunts are nuts and look like they hurt. It’s still bananas that the actors are doing most of them but even in the BTS featurette I watched afterwards, they all keep talking about showcasing “Hong Kong action” and that’s what they mean; actors doing the stunts regardless of how dangerous they might be.

Nitpicks aside this would be a good one to get on Blu if it exists. There’s plenty to admire. The Dragon Dynasty dvd is a 2-disc set loaded w/extras. I didn’t attempt to spin up the second disc but I’d love to watch them all and hear the commentary with Jaycee, Shawn, Andy On and Bey Logan. I listened to a little of it and it’s p great altho the Edison Chen jokes are gross in retrospect.

RIP Benny Chan (October 7, 1961 - August 23, 2020)
