TRANSFER STUDENT—This was the third film in the Nobuhiko Obayashi tribute on DKUTV today (the second one I watched and hadn’t seen before). Can’t recall if this has been scheduled before but I wanna say no bc I probably would’ve watched it then.
I have a file of this but the subtitles are out of sync so I gave up viewing it. Was happy to see this programmed on DKU (another fansub) but I was so tired while viewing this… it’s a body swap flick but not really played like a comedy (even tho it’s sold as such; it’s quite melancholic and bittersweet by the end). It’s more coming-of-age as these two teens try to deal with the situation of living in each other’s bodies and lives. Good movie but challenging in the morning with tired eyes. Hopefully I can locate a better digital copy of this somewhere for another viewing bc it is very good.
Didn’t realize this was Satomi Kobayashi’s very first role/feature film! She’s really great in this. A tad distressing that she was 16yo when they made this film (she turned 17 in May ‘82; movie was released in April ‘82) given the brief nude scenes she has. Nothing super explicit just that “oh no I’m in someone else’s body what are these boobs” kind of thing but still. She went on to do more films with Obayashi and eventually Godzilla vs Mothra.
update: after thinking on this movie some more I wonder if because Satomi is nude in the movie and 16 years old at the time is one factor in why this movie hasn’t gotten a better release or been picked up for distribution outside of Japan.
