A semi-biographical account of Yip Man, the first martial arts master to teach the Chinese martial art of Wing Chun. The film focuses on events surrounding Ip that took place in the city of Foshan between the 1930s to 1940s during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Directed by Wilson Yip, the film stars Donnie Yen in the lead role, and features fight choreography by Sammo Hung.

Started this late thinking I’d watch 30 minutes or so but watched the whole dang thing bc it’s so dang good. A Donnie Yen tour de force that puts this in his top 3 performances IMO. Oddly I’ve only seen this once before but it registered so deeply that I still recalled nearly every scene and action beat. Very rare for me anymore.
Also realized that I don’t own this one. Need to rectify that someday. Would love a 4K set of all the Ip Man films.
