Viewing Notes

Think about a movie that brings joy or happiness… this is the opposite of that. Self-loathing, unhappiness, loneliness, dissatisfaction, etc. Misery porn, I guess. Mixed neutral on this one b/c on one hand, this is a very well-crafted movie. Looks and sounds great with some very nice production in many locations around Tokyo with great acting from all involved. On the other hand, yeah. We get it. Life sucks for a lot of ppl in various stages of their young lives. The movie is also uneven in that regard.

Some of these stories make complete sense. Others like the UberEats guy… confusing. Perhaps the point of the movie is “see, your life isn’t so bad b/c look at these young ppl that should be happy but are not.” Or maybe even simpler, “we all have it bad so just deal with it and figure it out.” It’s a film that’s trying to do a lot with a lot of characters that it can’t succeed. Hard to sympathize with a character we only get a few brief moments with. Again, maybe that’s the aim; seeing a piece of yourself in one of these situations but not all of them.

This is the second film I’ve watched early in JAPAN CUTS 2021 where Twitter (and social media, in general) play a part in the story. The previous being WONDERFUL PARADISE. There’s also some very Japanese aspects presented here which I do find interesting like transient living and love hotels among others. As cohesive story, however, this doesn’t quite work but is certainly pretty to look at and appreciate.
