Overview

London’s jewel thieves are under the thumb of a mysterious fence, who ruthlessly exposes any thief who crosses him. Desperate, Scotland Yard re-hires ex-Inspector Barrabal who, as a known drunkard, is ideally suited to go undercover with a faked criminal record (which may spoil his chances with lovely Carol Stedman).

Viewing Notes

Another early British film noir that teases something more sinister but fails to fully lean into a pretty cool premise of this scary dude that fences stolen jewels. He’s kinda like a Jack the Ripper motif but instead of going that direction the movie bumbles around with false accusations and a lounge singer for no real good reason until the “greatest criminal London has ever seen” is finally cornered in a lackluster ending.
