Viewing Notes

Another one I meant to watch last month. Was eager to revisit since it’s been two decades (!!!) and it’s the debut of my fave, whom I’m also doing a mini project for this year. This is much better than I remembered. Amazing what time and perspective can do for our opinions and general thoughts. Not that I disliked this movie; I just didn’t have a good foundation to understand and appreciate what I was seeing.

This is a very entertaining DIY indie by Kitamura that displays his range as a director very early in his career. That he plucked Tak off the streets and made him his lead was a bold move that pays off here. He has charisma for days. He’s physical and funny and looks like a star. Perhaps the only real nit to pick is that this is long movie and way longer for this kind of genre film. It would hit harder if it was tighter, like a series of punches to the face. It has so much going for it but is stretched thin at times. I’d love to see a Kitamura cut that shaved 20minutes off.
