Viewing Notes

Quite the spectacle to view this on the IMAX screen as intended (it was shot in IMAX). Very ornate with some v nice digital VFX, which is most of the movie and expected for an epic fantasy film. I’m just a little tired of the same “emperor / king / ruler craves power and wants to rule the world and will betray / backstab / destroy anyone in his path including friends and family” premise. Feels like so many of these epic Chinese fantasy action films are cut from the same cloth.

I do like the other Wuershan films I’ve seen (both in theater, as well) and still need to see his take on Painted Skin, which I’ve owned for years. This literary adaptation leans way more into the Three Kingdoms lore with the rise of the Shang Dynasty unlike his other action adventure films. When this movie is being magical and fantastical I was into it. When it’s just soldiers blindly obeying their ruler and dying for it, I checked out.

It gets super fantastical in the finale and some ppl walked out! Like all that shit in the previous two hours was fine but now that wizard doing that crazy shit is way too much! I hope the second part gets a theatrical release as I am curious about what will happen next.
