Overview

In the year 10,191, the most precious substance in the universe is the spice Melange. The spice extends life. The spice expands consciousness. The spice is vital to space travel.  The spice exists on only one planet in the entire universe, the vast desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune.  Its native inhabitants, the Fremen, have long held a prophecy that a man would come, a messiah who would lead them to true freedom.

Viewing Notes

On this rewatch, in which the new 4K restoration looks amazing on the big screen, what struck me the most is how small everything feels. Even when it’s supposed to show grand scale it feels claustrophobic. I’m sure a lot of that is just how the movie was filmed and crafted, on sets and with miniatures. Probably more noticeable now having just revisited the new DUNE Part One movie.

The other very noticeable thing is how rushed everything is. There’s no time to let anything breathe or sink in or development bc they rush from scene to scene, plot beat to plot beat to squeeze it all in one film. I don’t know other than just my own observation that this was probably one reason why the movie didn’t do so well. It’s hard to care about anyone or anything when we’re given so little time with them in service of the grand overarching story.

All that said, I still really love this weird movie and the little Lynchian flourishes. Plus this is a stacked cast. Seeing David Lynch as the mining machine driver made me LOL. I don’t know why I didn’t see this back in 1984 but it’s a minor regret. Followed by not buying all the toys that were on clearance.
