Viewing Notes

First film in our movie night and one I’ve been wanting to see for a long time. Saw this probably only once before on VHS back in the day and at a time when I really didn’t appreciate Sammo Hung. So for a long while I always had a negative impression of this film and it’s only been in recent years when I knew I needed to revisit this. Good thing is that it was like viewing for the first time since I forgot most of it. There’s a few things I recalled (oddly the scene with the pregnant prostitute and her husband getting killed was one).

Anyways, this is another Sammo directed film that goes from humor to real dark in the same scene. It’s crazy to be like “LOL that’s funny… oh that’s not cool” often throughout this movie. Doesn’t pull any punches, that’s for sure. Cool to see Jet Li’s wife Nina Li in a decent role. She doesn’t get a lot to do but she’s integral to story. First Mang Hoi film I’ve seen since his passing last fall. He’s terrific as usual. Huge loss and gone way too soon.

It’s unreal that this movie is owned by WB and they haven’t done any special upgraded release or announced one, which I can’t see them doing at this stage. This movie should live w/the other Eureka Sammo films.

RIP Mang Hoi
