With his comics Feng takes vengeance whenever he’s slighted or passed over in the studio, drawing his colleagues and boss into unflattering scenes. But when Bai Ze discovers an illustrated version of himself suffering under Feng’s brush, he’s far from angry. He praises Feng Xue for his originality, and takes the new draft to his boss. Viewing Notes

Totally understand the low ratings for this one. It’s a modern story weaved into a fantasy tale, two different stories which neither are all that good. The modern corporate story is so bizarre as if the filmmakers have never been part of the comic book / manga industry and have this wild idea of what they think it’s like (a high end advertising agency). Unless that’s really how comic books are produced in China (but I don’t believe that). So it was fascinating to see given all I know about how comics / manga are produced. Its depiction here is a fantasy!

The actual action fantasy story is the story the comic book makers are trying to tell and they also are characters in the fantasy. The corporate boss is a real asshole and wants them to produce crappy softcore comics but they keep resisting telling this period fantasy story.

None of it really works but it was amusing to watch unfold. And the subtitles were decent. But cannot recommend despite how ridiculous it was to see the corporate boss tell his employees to “fuck off” if they didn’t follow his orders.
