Viewing Notes

I’ve become tired of Diabo Cody’s style, as JENNIFER’S BODY is one of the worst movies I’ve seen and UNITED STATES OF TARA wore out its welcome after one season. After hearing rave reviews for YOUNG ADULT, I rolled my eyes and went on my merry cinematic way. The eye rolling wasn’t entirely dserved.

The main character Mavis Gary is the third entry in the pantheon of the cutesy-schticky women that Cody’s building, following Juno from JUNO and Kate from USoT. At first I rolled my eyes and was prepared to hate, especially when I found little comedy in a comedy. But somehow, some way, I actually started to like it a litle bit. YOUNG ADULT took a sadder and darker turn than I expected, and that really helped my eyes roll back to their natural positions.

Though Charlize Theron stands out and delivers a fine performance, the real star in the film is Patton Oswalt; he really helps the pieces of the film stick togther.

Given the charactar arc of Mavis realizing her cutesy-schticky bit is tired, Cody needs to realize the same, and let this be the final chapter in a cutesy-schticky trilogy (if you don’t count USoT).
