Viewing Notes

Trepidation goes hand in hand with any beloved classic series that’s revived. THE MUPPETS was the movie I was most looking forward to in 2011 and it was also the one I was most afraid of because I would be devastated if it were horrible. Luckily, it overcame my fears and is far better than I’d hoped for.

The movie hits almost all the right notes, but it does have a few off-key moments. Amy Adams is forgettable, though I’ve always felt like she’s interchangeable with Rachel McAdams and Jenna Fischer (they should play sisters in a movie). Also, the movie is self-referential a few too many times, though it is funny; it’s a small but noticeable irk that probably wasn’t needed.

Based on my short memory, this soundtrack is my favorite of any Muppets movie yet; “Are You a Man or a Muppet” and “Life’s a Happy Song” are two of the best in the catalog. I didn’t have the problems with “Teen Spirit” or “Cluck You” that many seemed to; I actually liked them. But, some of the songs don’t play well; “Me Party” is forgettable, and Chris Cooper’s “Let’s Talk About Me” is just awkward. I also think it’s completely unnecessary to include any songs that aren’t sung by the Muppets (see “Me and Julio”), and I always question the use of Jefferson Starship’s “We Built This City,” whether or not it was sung by The Muppets (it wasn’t).

After FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL, I expected Jason Segel to do a decent job, but I didn’t expect to love this movie as much as did; his enthusiasm for the property shines through. Segel did such a fantastic job that I want him to take over the franchise part and parcel and usher in a new MUPPETS SHOW and a raft of movies. THE MUPPETS is funny, witty, catchy, and sweet, all wrapped up in a felty package.
