Viewing Notes

It didn’t go as far as I wanted, but STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS is a lot of fun and is one of the better films in the franchise.

The best episodes of Star Trek were often those that tried to explore what it means to be human through a non-human frame; this movie tries that in a very light way and succeeds in minor fashion, but it’s mostly a straight ahead action film in the vein of WRATH OF KHAN or UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY.

It could have, and should have, done more to plumb the depths of that “soul searching,” but it obviously wanted to focus more on Khan’s wrath and action and in that it fell a bit short; it needed just a few more minutes of antagonistic exchange or dialogue between Kirk and Khan to provoke that climax, which was fantastic.

The cast’s chemistry, as with the first reboot, is still on par with the first generation movies and they’re a fun bunch to watch on screen; I kinda got distracted by watching Cumberbatch’s mouth though.

Each of his films has a few issues and things as a Trekkie that irk me, but overall Abrams has done a better job than most could have of rebooting the franchise.

With this movie, it feels like the origin story is complete and we don’t need more earth-oriented action in the third Abrams-verse installment; it’s time to see that 5-year mission.
