The Lady Assassin (1983)

Directed by Tony Liu Chun-Ku

Action | Eastern

Overview

Veteran action actor and director Lu Chun-ku set his sights on a tale of Ching Dynasty royal intrigue as an excuse to hire his favorite action stars, gather three choreographers, and film one fight-filled conspiracy after another. Liu Hsueh-hua is the title character caught between battling princes. Then there’s award-winning actor Ku Feng, “Bastard Swordsman” Hsu Shao-chiang, “King of Shaw Brothers’ Screen Villains” Wang Lung-wei, “Venom” Sun Chien, and even the director shows up to get his kicks in this danger-fraught adventure.

Viewing Notes

Browsing around I found a 4K version on YT and when I set the video output to 1080p it looked stunning, better than a lot of the other Shaw Blu-rays I’ve seen. Was so impressed I just watched the entire movie again despite having seen it not once but three times prior.

Those previous views were on El Rey Network so they wouldn’t have been very good anyways and full of commercial interruptions. This viewing on YT had zero ads and kept me entranced with how pretty the the PQ was.

All previous notes still stand tho it is more amusing to me now to see babyface Max Mok in this as I will forever associate him with the Once Upon a Time in China series. All the women are super badass so another good one for International Women’s Day. Has one of the best — if not THE BEST — freeze frame endings. This is probably a top ten Shaw for me which is saying a lot. Hopefully this one will find its way to one of the sets soon enough. Maybe it already has?
