Viewing Notes
TCM had an evening of noir films all released in 1944 (the others were DOUBLE INDEMNITY, LAURA, and MURDER, MY SWEET), the year that really kickstarted noir.
This is a fascinating film, notable for having a female protagonist tracking down the killer. Ella Raines is terrific, as well as drop dead gorgeous (why wasn’t she a bigger star?).
The most eye-popping scene is in a jazz club with Elisha Cook Jr. doing a crazy, sexually-charged drum solo with Raines egging him on. Did the censors notice this?
