The first Bergman film that really feels like a “Bergman film”. The growth in his filmmaking is noticeable here.
The idyllic Swedish summer is captured beautifully. The camerawork, overall, is a huge step up. Gunnar Fischer was Bergman’s cinematographer for most of his films in the 40’s and 50’s and probably doesn’t get the credit he deserves (understandably, being in the shadow of Sven Nykvist).
Maj-Britt Nilsson is very good and probably also underrated because of the great leading ladies Bergman had in future years.
