This is a wonderful film. Two teenagers, with drab jobs in the city, run away together to the country until the reality of the world sets in. It was somewhat scandalous at the time due to some female nudity.
Harriet Anderson, in her first film for Bergman, oozes sexuality. Her character is overly demanding and irresponsible, but at the same time, shows a kind of female independence that hadn’t been seen on the big screen. There’s a shot of her smoking a cigarette, then looking directly into the camera, as if she’s telling the audience, “Don’t you dare judge me.” Fantastic.
